Have you been invited to a new baby born reception? Do you want to give the mother a creative and original gift that she'll actually end up using? Ever since I saw a beautiful diaper cake in an exhibition here in Kuwait which was little pricey, I wanted to try making one. So I went online and found lots of inspiration and tutorials.
First you might wonder what a diaper cake is. A diaper cake is a wonderfully creative gift for an expectant mother. It’s not meant to be eaten; instead it’s made as a decorative gift of diapers for mothers to use after their baby is born. It is a collection of diapers rolled and stacked together to resemble a traditional tiered cake. There can be 1, 2, 3 or more tiers.
Some little baby items can also be used to decorate the cake. For example a pacifier, rattle, hair brush, teething ring and little socks. Making a diaper cake isn’t all that difficult. You can make it from scratch easily from supplies you could buy at your local grocery store.
It’s important to have in mind what you want your diaper cake to look like before you start. How many layers do you want it to be?
Once you have an idea of how you want your cake to look, then it’s important to find a set of great instructions online. I found a really easy step by step video on how to make a diaper cake. Not only was easy to make because of the video, but it only took less than 30 minute to make it.
These instructions will guide you through the step by steps of creating a great diaper cake.
You will need:
- 50-80 disposable diapers, number of diapers depends on how many tiers you want, try to find plain ones so the colors won't clash too much.
- Rubber bands (various sizes)
- 16” Disposable cardboard platter.
- At least 8 feet of 1’ wide ribbon (need more if cake is more than 3 tiers)
- Clear adhesive tape
- Decorating items (pacifiers, bibs, toys, socks, etc.)
- Decorative cake topper (stuffed animal or bottle filled with candy)
Method:
- Roll diapers with tabs tucked in.
- Wrap rubber bands around each diaper roll.
- Use rubber bands to create a bundle with the diapers (may need inner & outer bundle for larger tiers)
- Use ribbon around the cake to cover rubber bands
- Use the clear adhesive tape to attach the tiers to the platter
- Now use the decorations you bought to tuck around the cake
