Painting walls in your home can improve the look of the room, and can brighten your mood. Painting a room is one of the most inexpensive ways to give it a fresh look.
Here how to prepare your room for painting:

1. When planning to paint a room in your home, select a paint that is compatible with the furnishings and the rest of the home decor. To begin painting a room, first you will need to decide on a paint color. Browse paint colors at your local hardware store. It's best to bring home a few sample color cards and see how they look in your home, before making a final decision. For a smaller room, you should choose a lighter color if you want the room to appear larger.

2. Make sure there is adequate ventilation in the room

3. Prepare the walls and ceiling. Never paint on wallpaper.

4. Before painting, make sure walls are dust free. Take down any wall hangings and the nails used to hold them up. If there are any outstanding holes or imperfections in your walls, it makes sense to spackle them beforehand.

5. Remove or cover furniture and floors to avoid paint spatters. Keep a damp cloth handy just in case a small drip occurs that needs to be cleaned. It is much easier to do this while paint is wet.

6. Always invest in good quality paint as it will last longer, and also provide a much better cover than cheaper brands. Never buy too little either. It is better to have excess paint than to run out halfway through doing the ceiling.

7. Make sure that you have all the supplies that you need. This may include: paint rollers, an edger, paint brushes, and paint trays. Another thing you may consider is using plastic or old sheets or towels to cover furniture and floors that you do not want to get paint on.

8. Tape off any windows or areas that you don’t want it to be painted. From there you want to paint the trim around all the door and window frames.

9. Always paint the ceiling before painting the walls. If you can't make a perfect line where walls meet ceiling, it is less noticeable to have a little of the wall paint on the ceiling than to have any ceiling paint on the wall.

10. Cover buckets when you're not using them.

11. When you are finished, wait for the paint to fully dry before removing the tape. If you do not wait, it may rip some of the paint off the walls. Make sure that you clean any brushes, trays, and rollers that you plan on using again. Just rinse in the sink with water and thoroughly squeeze with your hands to get all the paint out.

With all the cleaning done and the paint dry, you can put any furniture back into room and enjoy.
