We all know there is no real cure for the common cold. Most of us like to take the easy way out by grabbing some tissues and downing some cold medicine that keeps you in a fog till the worst of the cold passes.
I'd like to share some tips to help ease your cold symptoms and get you feeling better quicker;
• Try taking a day off, from school or work. You wouldn't want to feel uncomfortable at work, with a blocked, runny nose and the urge to sneeze every 10 minutes. This helps limit spreading the illness to others, and also helps you conserve energy to fight the infection.
• Don’t take medicines unless absolutely necessary! As annoying as all the sneezing, sniffling, and congestion are, they are actually your body’s natural defense against the invading virus
• Drink extra liquids (such as juices, water, or chicken soup) to avoid dehydration.
• Rub a generous amount of Vick's vaporub over your chest. Rub it on the chest and throat for relief from a tight chest or scratchy throat.
• Stop smoking and avoid secondhand smoke, which can make cold symptoms worse.
• Use saline (salt water) nose drops to help loosen mucus and moisten the tender skin in your nose.
• Be sure to have plenty of tissues on hand.
• Take vitamin C, which may shorten the duration of your cold.
• Wash your hands frequently, which will help prevent the spread of your cold or flu to others. Follow it up with hand sanitizer. Use the sanitizer between hand washings.
• Steamy showers moisturize your nasal passages and relax you. If you're dizzy from the flu, run a steamy shower while you sit on a chair nearby and take a sponge bath.
• If you develop a fever in excess of 100 Fahrenheit, consult your doctor. High fever, and chills is an indication of influenza (the flu), a more serious illness.
• Get plenty of rest, especially while you have a fever. Rest helps your body fight infection.
• Check with your doctor if you are unsure that the symptoms you have mean you have a cold. If cold symptoms last more than 5 days consult your doctor immediately as you may have a more serious condition.
